Powering Through for Wessex Cancer Support: Our Inaugural Dragon Boat Race

There’s an old saying that "smooth seas do not make skilful sailors," and yesterday, our community proved they are the most skilful of all. Despite the weather’s best attempts to dampen the spirits, the energy at the water’s edge was absolutely electric for our first-ever Dragon Boat Race.

More Than Just a Race

Watching the dragon heads break through the mist as teams found their rhythm was a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when we pull in the same direction. From the rhythmic beat of the drums to the final, exhausted sprints toward the finish line, every moment was a testament to grit and camaraderie.

Defying the Downpour

While the forecast promised a challenge, the reality was a true test of spirit. The torrential rain could have easily sent everyone running for cover, but our rowers didn't flinch. If anything, the heavier the rain fell, the harder the teams paddled. Watching the boats cut through the grey mist and hearing the chants of the crews drown out the sound of the downpour was nothing short of inspiring. To our participants: you didn’t just brave the elements; you conquered them.

Racing for a Cause: Wessex Cancer Support

While the competition on the water was fierce, the real "why" behind every paddle stroke was Wessex Cancer Support.

We know that for those living with cancer, the "weather" isn't always fair. Wessex Cancer Support provides the emotional and practical lifelines that help people navigate their most difficult journeys. Every splash of water and every tired muscle yesterday was a tribute to the bravery of those the charity supports every day. We are so proud to have raised funds to ensure no one has to face cancer alone. The event raised £19,000 to support Islanders affected by cancer.

In the debut Wessex Cancer Support Dragon Boat Race, held on 30th August 2025 at Island Harbour on the Isle of Wight, the top finishers were:

  • 1st Place: WH Brading

  • 2nd Place: PC Consultants

  • 3rd Place: WRS Systems

Through the Lens

Jennifer Stone stepped in at the eleventh hour to help capture the event. Capturing fast-moving boats in difficult weather on a tiny little boat is no small feat, but I managed to bottle the lightning of the day perfectly. My photos don’t just show the race; they show the laughter, the soaked competitors, and the shared triumph of supporting such a vital cause.

Despite challenging weather conditions, the event successfully raised £19,000 to support local cancer services. Other participants included teams from Biscoes Solicitors and Solent Cruises, who also contributed to the fundraising.

I hope to be at the starting line next year!
